“Valoración ACB”: the need to change this performance metric for basketball players
Main Article Content
Abstract
The assessment of the performance of basketball players through the box-score is currently ubiquitous, mainly due to the apparent simplicity of its conception since the resulting value comes from the combination of different easily identifiable game actions. This work analyzes the system for evaluating the performance of basketball players adopted by the ACB League in Spain – “Valoración ACB” -, showing that it lacks a theoretical and empirical basis, both for the selection of the variables and for the assignment of weights. Therefore, the metric is not valid and provides an erroneous drawing of what it is precisely intended to measure. Given the importance of this metric from the media point of view and the market value of the players, it is advocated to stop using it and replace it with options with a theoretical and empirical basis.
