Factorial Structure and Sex Invariance of the Global Stress Scale in Peruvian Athletes
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the factorial structure and sex invariance of the Global Stress Scale (EGS) in Peruvian athletes. Materials and Methods: The study sample consisted of 1176 Peruvian athletes from various disciplines (soccer, volleyball, marathon, and functional fitness), with a sex distribution of 690 men (58.7%) and 486 women (41.3%). Participants' ages ranged from 21 to 46 years (M = 33.61, SD = 5.73). The Global Stress Scale (EGS) by Cohen was used. The EGS showed a Cronbach's alpha of .89 and an omega coefficient of .82, indicating high internal reliability. Results: The bidimensional model showed an adequate fit, with a χ²/df of 2.07, an RMSEA of .045, and an SRMR of .032. The CFI and TLI indices were .94 and .92, respectively. Additionally, factorial invariance was calculated for the bidimensional model by sex, demonstrating that the EGS maintains measurement invariance by sex. Conclusions: The results indicate that the Global Stress Scale is a valid and reliable tool for measuring stress in Peruvian athletes, maintaining its factorial structure and sex invariance. This highlights the applicability of the EGS in a specific sports context, considering the unique cultural, social, and environmental challenges and pressures faced by Peruvian athletes.
