Effects of abuse and violence on youth mental health

Abstract
The mental health of the youth population in Colombia faces significant challenges due to multiple socioeconomic, cultural, and family factors. Among these, child abuse has been shown to be a critical conditioning factor in the configuration of brain development, affecting cognitive and emotional processes that can lead to mental disorders. Through a reflection on the evidence and some epidemiological data, this article addresses the relationship between experiences of violence and the affectation of brain structures and functions that mediate cognition and emotion, affecting behavior and facilitating the replication of spirals of violence. Finally, the implications for public policies and intervention strategies are examined, highlighting the need for an integrative approach to mental health.
