Abstract

The aim of this research was to compare the neuromuscular adaptations and changes in physical performance after a periodized versus non-periodized plyometric training. A quasi-experimental design of pre-test and post-test was carried out with a population of 20 soccer players (randomly forming a Periodized Group (PG; n=10) and Non-Periodized Group (NG; n=10). By means of a contact platform, five jumps were evaluated: SJ, CMJ, ABK, DJ15, DJ30 and DJ45. The program was executed during 6 weeks (12 sessions, 30-45 minutes, total volume of 720 jumps). In both groups, all jumps reflected significant increases. The NG presented major changes (SJ: 23.02 Δ%, d=.84, p=<;.05; CMJ: 21.86 Δ%, d=.84, p= <;.01; ABK: 16.16 Δ%, d= .61, p=.07; DJ15: 34.39 Δ%, d=1.20, p= <.001; DJ30: 36.13 Δ%, d= 1.23, p=<.001; DJ45: 34.86 Δ%, d= 1.33, p= <.001). However, the PG also showed considerable increasing in the performance (SJ: 12.15 Δ%, d=.45, p= .14; CMJ: 21.06 Δ%, d=.57, p= .054; ABK: 19.90 Δ%, d= .57, p=.066; DJ15: 41.25 Δ%, d=.94, p=<.01; DJ30: 28.70 Δ%, d= .74, p=<.001; DJ45: 34.87 Δ%, d= .93, p= <.01). It is concluded that in short term, the non-undulating plyometric training program was more effective in improving muscle performance rather than undulating one. This could be due to the fact that, although the volume did not undulate in the NP, there was a logical progression in terms of exercise variety.
